As the AMRIT project gains momentum, we are looking ahead to 2025 with optimism and determination. After a pivotal first year of preparation in 2024, where our team organised workflows, assessed existing solutions, and laid the groundwork for our vision, the coming year will see the first tangible outcomes of our efforts.
At its core, AMRIT aims to strengthen and consolidate the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) by harmonising, standardising, and enhancing ocean observing activities. Through the creation of the EOOS Technical Support Centre (TSC), AMRIT will provide digital tools, operational support, and a centralised dashboard to streamline and modernise the flow of ocean data across platforms.
Key Ambitions for 2025
First Results: The tools and systems designed in 2024 will begin to take shape in 2025, offering initial results that will be tested, refined, and shared with users, stakeholders, and the broader marine research community.
Digital Ecosystem Development: The EOOS TSC ecosystem, centred on a comprehensive dashboard, will streamline metadata flows through APIs that connect in situ instruments to the dashboard. This will modernise the flow of information and extend data access to coastal nodes and other underrepresented communities.
Enhanced Data FAIRness: By improving data tracking, metadata flows, and Quality Control processes, AMRIT will enhance the usability and FAIRness (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) of ocean data. This will also provide greater recognition for the work of operators and researchers.
Blended Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs): A major milestone for 2025 will be the development of blended EOVs – combining datasets from multiple sources and platforms. This innovative approach will improve data usability and enable more robust insights into our oceans.
Engaging the Community
AMRIT is, at its heart, a marine research infrastructure-driven project. By promoting collaboration, asking for input, and seeking for feedback from a wide range of research infrastructure stakeholders and users, we aim to create tools and solutions that are practical, user-friendly, and impactful. Whether you are part of the consortium or an external partner, your voice matters in shaping the future of the EOOS TSC.
Looking Ahead
The journey to advance marine research infrastructures is a shared responsibility, and we are grateful for the trust placed in us by the European Commission and the broader marine research community. As we move into 2025, we are confident that the preparatory work done in 2024 will serve as a strong foundation for the ambitious steps ahead.
